Sania Mavrokefalos
Sania Mavrokefalos is the Islip Crossfit Member Spotlight for June 2018! Sania is a force!  She is so dedicated to improving and she wears that determination all over her face in each and every WOD.  It is clear to see that she has steadily improved and pushes her own limits every day she sets foot into the box.  Congratulations Sania on this well deserved spotlight!

A word from her coaches…

I had the pleasure of coaching Sania for her first trial class, I was immediately drawn to her intensity. She seemed like the type of person that would never be defeated and determined to do anything. 7 months later, I can confirm I was 100% accurate! She YouTube researched every movement before class just to have a head start, I recalled doing the exact same thing when I started.  Sania is a pleasure to have in class, she pushes so hard during every workout and is always there to cheer on everyone else when she’s done. When I scale her, she gives me a death look but does it anyway, then thanks me later! I can’t say enough how much she has improved since she walked into the gym, not only her movements but also her confidence with her newfound muscles!  Just keep doing what you’re doing….  -Coach Nick

Sania is a perfect example and an excellent role model to show that literally anyone can do Crossfit. Since the first day she came in to present day, she has always been trying her absolute best and hardest to improve, and she has certainly has improved due to her hard work and dedication. She listens attentively to the coaches on how to properly do everything, scaling, speed, pace. She is extremely coachable and it makes my job fun seeing all the improvements she has made. She is seeing how the community can really be a fun family and she encourages everyone whenever she can.  It was very easy to see Sania’s level of commitment and passion to Crossfit. She is a positive role model for everyone, that hard work pays off and she is always ready and willing to listen to get better. -Coach Andrew

 

ABOUT SANIA….

Tell us about yourself?

  • I am 36 years old.
  • I have been married to my husband, Jason for almost 8 years now. We have one rambunctious 5 year old boy.  
  • I went to Farmingdale State University for my undergrad, where I studied graphic design and played volleyball. It is also where I met my hubby.
  • I love traveling. My husband and I spent 13 months backpacking together. We did this back when we were dating. So, I guess you can say if you’re able to travel the world with one person and still love each other at the end of it all, you’re destined to be together.
  • I also enjoy crafting, baking and using power tools!

What do you do out in the real world?  

During our travels, Jason and I volunteered at a school just outside of Angkor Wat, Cambodia. It was then that I realized I wanted to be a teacher. I have been working as a Special Education teacher in Woodside, Queens for eight years now. I am presently teaching a self contained kindergarten/first grade bridge class.

 

CROSSFIT JOURNEY…

What brought you to Islip CF?

I have had gym memberships in the past, but would get frustrated. Often times, I would walk into the gym with a “plan” and then see someone using the equipment I had intended on working on. I would end up on the treadmill instead. ( I HATE the treadmill) Eventually, my membership was more like a monthly donation. I kept complaining to my husband about how I wanted to workout but I always had an excuse as to why I couldn’t. He got tired of hearing my complaints and excuses, so he insisted that I check out Islip CrossFit.

 

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

I have been doing CrossFit for about 7 months now.

 

What was your first CF workout? What did you think after it?

I don’t remember the exact workout, but I do recall wall balls and box jumps. Nick had me use the really small box. I remember giving him this look like “Really, guy?!” Let’s just say that little box kicked my butt.

 

What changes have you made in your workouts that have been the most successful?

It’s very easy to get caught up in chasing those gainz. I have learned to listen to my body and the coaches. If it doesn’t feel right, I’ll drop the weights down and focus on form.

 

Most embarrassing/funniest gym moment?

Falling on my butt doing Squat Snatches or Overhead Squats. (It happens every time those movements are in the workout)

 

Favorite movement? Least favorite? Benchmark WOD?

Favorite movements: Back Squats

Least Favorite movements: It’s a tie between Burpees and Snatches. They are both spawns of the devil.

Benchmark WOD: Fran

 

Favorite memory OR most memorable moment at Islip Crossfit?

It’s a tie between the Open and Murph. The energy at the box was unreal. Let’s just say there was no need for anyone to take pre-workout.

Favorite workout music?

One of Taylor’s EDM stations, but when were lifting heavy I like listening to rock.

 

Advice for a new member or someone thinking of trying CrossFit?

It will feel intimidating. You will question your abilities. I felt, and at times still do feel that way. Ask lots of questions. Everyone here wants to see you excel. Trust the process, you will amaze yourself!

 

How do you find/make time to get your workouts in?

Since my husband is a police officer, our schedules rarely line up together. Being able to bring my son has been a TREMENDOUS help! If I wasn’t able to, I would probably only be able to come to the box once or twice a week. Now, not only do I get to come to the box 4-5 times a week, but my son is learning about the importance of fitness.

 

What is your favorite part of Islip CrossFit?

The bond that the members share during these workouts create a comradery that I have not experienced at any other gym.

 

What motivates you to keep coming back each day?

One thing that keep me coming back each day is knowing that each of the coaches are always looking out for you. Your goals, become their goals. Also, the amazing determination and strength of the members also motivates me. They come in everyday, set goals and destroy them!

 

 

What is your greatest achievement in your fitness so far?

I had always wanted to participate in a run and finally had the courage to do the EJ Foundation Jigsaw 4 Mile Run. Not only did I participate, but I surprised myself by running the entire race without stopping.

 

What has been the most challenging part?

I am my own worst enemy, so when I am unsuccessful with a movement I will beat myself over it.

 

Short term goal? Long term goal?

Short term goals: double-unders, butterfly pull-ups and getting my husband join.

Long term goals: bar muscle-ups and handstand push-ups

 

What/Who motivates or inspires you?

My son inspires and is my motivation to come back each day. It’s important to me that he not only see me doing something for myself but he also sees me struggle, fail and understands that you need to work hard to achieve your goals.

 

FOOD/NUTRITION…

Favorite Cheat Meal?

Chocolate is my Achilles heel.

 

What changes have you made in your diet that have been the most successful?

The Lurong Challenge has definitely helped me to become more aware of what I am putting into my body.

 

What is the worst “diet” you’ve ever been on?

That would be the “See-food” diet. I see it, I eat it.

 

What’s your go to breakfast?

A bacon, egg and extra cheese sandwich. Mmmm 🤤

 

Do you eat before you workout? (If so, what?)

Dear God, no! Just the thought of eating something before a workout makes me want to vomit.

 

JUST FOR FUN…..

Something no one at the gym knows about you?

As a kid, I did not have the pleasure of watching Saturday morning cartoons like most kids did. I spent my Saturday’s attending Polish School, where I learned about the language, history and how to dance Polish folk dances. 🇵🇱

What Superhero are you?

I am soooo far away from any Superhero status, but I do like She-Ra. What’s not to like about a badass blonde, who has a sword and a flying unicorn?!

Best Vacation?

Sailing up and down the coast of Thailand for 2 months.

 

If you aren’t at the box, where would we find you?

On my boat at Fire Island.

 

If you won lotto, what would you do?

I would buy a bigger boat and live on it in the Caribbean.

 

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?

I would charter a catamaran in the BVI with my family and a group of friends and go island hopping. I have never been to the BVI and want to explore the islands and do some fishing.

 

Who is your celebrity crush?

Hugh Jackman (Yum!)

The last picture on my phone is a selfie, Travis and I took together.
