Congratulations to our fierce teenage athlete, Victoria Delgado, on her November Member Spotlight. Her strength and determination at such a young age is truly admirable and her growth at the gym over the last 20 months has been remarkable. Victoria takes direction from the coaches, puts in the hard work, and practices to improve. Many of us have watched you grow into the beautiful, respectful, strong young woman you are today and we can’t wait to see what more you’ll achieve. Last year Victoria was asked to make a video project for her mental health unit. The project was to give a presentation on something you do to relieve stress. Most kids did a slide show on meditation or listening to music, but Victoria instantly knew she would create a video on CrossFit! “CrossFit has always been a stress reliever for me from the people, to getting a good workout in; I know that going to the gym will always improve my mood. Tell us about yourself?
I’m 15 years old, I live in West Islip with my mom, dad, 12 year old brother Joe, and adorable dog Buddy (aka Fishy). I also have a 22 year old half-sister, Gianna, who lives in Tallahassee with her roommate and gorgeous dog Ollie.
What do you do outside of the gym?
Outside of the gym I am a sophomore in high school and also a member of the competitive cheer team at my school.
What brought you to Islip CF? How long have you been doing CrossFit?
I’ve been crossfitting for almost two years now! I originally decided to join because my mom has been at Islip for close to 8 years and I decided it would be a good idea to get in shape for the upcoming cheer season. Once I joined I was instantly hooked and actually ended up taking off a season from cheer to focus on CF because I enjoyed it so much.
What was your first CF workout? What did you think after it?
I actually remember my first WOD pretty well. It had been a running clock for somewhere around 20 minutes with 3 rounds of back squats, and burpees, then with the remaining time you went for a 1 rep max back squat. I had done my first class with a really good friend at the time and I remember feeling just so accomplished and proud of myself and my friend after the workout was over.
What changes have you made in your workouts that have been the most successful?
Recently I’ve been trying really really hard to pace myself from the beginning and gradually push myself as the workout continues. This has been super hard for me to learn but it has definitely improved how I feel during and after a workout.
Most embarrassing/funniest gym moment?
I had to really think about this one but there was one Saturday and I remember it was a really long WOD with lots of running and situps and doubles and I was on my second to last round of situps when my hair tie snapped. I couldn’t see a thing and my hair was all over the place! Naturally, instead of stopping to go get another hair tie from my bag I ended up just screaming at whoever was around me for a hair tie because all I wanted was to be done with the workout. I definitely looked insane!
Favorite movement? Least favorite? Benchmark WOD?
My favorite movements are probably hang cleans, doubles, and box jump overs, least favorites are front squats (but only in a metcon I don’t mind them so much if where just lifting) and backsquats (I just hate these PERIOD!) Benchmark WOD: Annie maybe? I feel like thats a pretty basic answer but Annie’s definitely a fun one.
Favorite memory at Islip Crossfit?
My favorite memory at ICF is the Internal Competition by far! That day was just so much fun!
If you could program it, what is your perfect workout?
15 minute AMRAP 8 heavy hang cleans, 6 pull-ups, 2 rope climbs
Its a mix of things I love but are also a little challenging for me at the same time. I love those types of workouts where you know you can do it but you’re definitely going to have to push yourself a little more than usual to get it done.
Favorite workout music?
This really depends on what the workout is and how I’m feeling that day but normally I’m down for anything EXCEPT FOR COUNTRY! I just cannot workout to country music (sorry nick)
Advice for a new member or someone thinking of trying CrossFit?
Things are going to be very intimidating at first, but trust me when I say don’t be afraid to push yourself because you are capable of much more than you think you are and eventually all you’re hard work is going to pay off!
How do you find/make time to get your workouts in?
This has been very hard especially lately with cheer practice ending pretty late, but the truth is I love crossfit so I find the time. Crossfit is always a priority to me just because of how much I love it. Some nights it’s just not realistic with homework and cheer but if I can I really try my best to get to the gym. It can also be difficult because contrary to many people’s beliefs I cannot drive yet. So thanks to everyone that’s ever scrambled around to pick me up and drop me off just so I can get my workout in.
What is your favorite part of Islip CrossFit?
The atmosphere and the people definitely. I’ve pretty much grown up at the gym so it’s always been like a second home to me. The box is a place where I feel super comfortable and I love everyone there. Also I love to lift a heavy barbells.
What motivates you to keep coming back each day?
Just how much I enjoy it and what I get out of working out. I know I may complain A LOT before the workout actually starts but there’s no other feeling that compares to finishing a hard WOD with the people you love around you. It’s not a feeling most people my age experience, but it’s one I wouldn’t trade for the world.
What is your greatest achievement in your fitness so far?
Getting my pull-ups! This has been a goal of mine for forever and when it finally happened it felt amazing!
What has been the most challenging part?
Learning that just like everything else in life there are going to be highs and lows in your fitness journey. Some weeks you’re just not gonna feel as great as others and that’s okay you just need to listen to your body and keep moving along.
Short term goal? Long term goal?
Short term goal: become consistent and efficient with toes to bars
Long term goal: just continue to make fitness a priority and always make time for the things I enjoy
What/Who motivates or inspires you?
My mom has been a huge motivation in my journey so far. I mean without her I would never be where I am today. She’s constantly pushing me to be the best version of myself I can be and has just always been there for me. I seriously cannot thank her enough because she is seriously the best mom ever!!!
Favorite Cheat Meal?
Easy… french fries. I LOVEEE fries.
What changes have you made in your diet that have been the most successful to fuel your life?
My eating habits have definitely improved. I feel like the biggest change has been that I’ve been much more open to trying new things. Fruit is a great example it turns out that if I actually just try more fruits I end up liking them. Not sure if an end to my picky eating habits and the beginning of my CF journey are actually related but they both started around the same time soooo? 🤷🏻♀️
What’s your go to breakfast?
My go to breakfast is usually 1 piece of whole wheat toast and a couple of slices of chicken bacon (same thing as turkey bacon just with chicken instead of turkey)
Do you eat before you workout? (If so, what?)
This really all depends on the day and what my schedule is like. If I do eat, it’s usually something quick and light like some fruit or some crackers.

Something no one at the gym knows about you?
This is a tough one since some people at they gym have known me since I was 7-years old, but I did play the trumpet in 4th grade so theres that.
What are your job aspirations?
Um not too sure yet but becoming a school speech-therapist definitely interest me, or something to do with education.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
10 years is a long time! Probably have graduated from college and starting to figure my life out a little bit, but I don’t know only time will tell.
“Stronger than yesterday” short, simple, and sweet. Pretty sure I have this on bracelet somewhere too.
What Superhero are you?
I asked Joe and he said “Captain America because you’re a strong leader” (okay so I guess he’s not always the most annoying person on the planet)
Birds!!!!! Birds scare me I mean just like with their beaks and sharp talons and like the fact that they can fly!! No thank you!
A toss up between OBX and Virginia Beach, both were so fun.
If you aren’t at the box, where would we find you?
Probably at cheer practice, school, or studying for AP European History (that class is rough man!)
If you won lotto, what would you do?
Probably save most of it, all I really use money for now is going out with friends and shopping so there’s really nothing major I need all that money for at the moment.
If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?
Australia, I just think it’s so cool there! Like hello theres just kangaroos on the sides of the roads who wouldn’t want to see that! I would also definitely visit Crossfit Kova which is Kara Saunders gym and she is one of my favorite pro athletes!
Who is your celebrity crush?
Noah Centineo, although I’m not too fond of his latest hair cut
Last pic on your phone?
Mom on the train holding Mel’s fathead on the way to the city to go watch the marathon.
What’s the wallpaper on your phone right now?
My lockscreen is a picture of a sunset that I took in Virginia and my home screen is a picture I took at the hot air balloon festival.

My two most used emojis are the pink heart and crazy-eyed tongue sicking out one by far
What’s the last thing you searched for on Google?
“How to tell if a subway is going uptown or downtown” me and mom were a bit worried about taking the subway for the first time lol!
