January 2020

Congratulations to Islip CrossFit’s first 2020 Member Spotlight, Steve Affelt. Steve was voted by his coaches based on his efforts and achievements. He shows up to the gym to work hard and make it count. Rather than taking the easy way out, Steve scales appropriately to work on his weaknesses but still get the intended outcome the workout. He’s a wizard stick champ and we’re proud that he is part of our community. Keep up the great work, Steve!

Work and raise kids. Gym hours are my off hours.
What brought you to Islip CF? How long have you been doing CrossFit?
I needed a programed and instructed routine because I was not accomplishing anything by myself. I joined Islip Crossfit because they gave a fireman’s discount.
What was your first CF workout? What did you think after it?
I cannot remember what is was, but I do remember not knowing what the movement names meant until a month in.
What changes have you made in your workouts that have been the most successful?
Instead of substituting a movement that I could not finish, i.e. 25 pull -ups with 25 ring rows, I cut the number of pull ups to something I could manage like 12. So I get better at the recommended movement instead of doing something I feel is easier.
