Maggie Donohue

April 2018

Congratulations to our April 2018 Member Spotlight, Maggie! There is no one like her. Maggie’s spirit lights up the gym at all times. No matter the day or time, there is nothing but positivity surrounding her. She beams happiness and will never miss the chance to tell you how awesome you performed and how motivational you are to others. Little does she realize, she is the true motivation to us. She's an avid 6am-er who has transformed her body to become stronger and more stable than ever before...and Lisa is determined to get her to the games next year 🙂 She has the biggest of hearts and the warmest of souls.  Maggie, we can’t speak highly enough of how wonderful you are and how much you contribute joy to our community. We all look up you and the beautiful person that you are. We are so beyond happy to have you as part of this family. Congratulations on your well deserved member spotlight.

A word from her fellow athletes….

Maggie is truly an inspiration!!  I don’t think she realizes just how amazing she is!  She pushes herself and those around her by being so awesome and motivating!!  She’s a constant reminder of the benefits of fitness and healthy living, while having fun and enjoying life!!  I’m thankful to have her as a 6am workout buddy, as my Sunday funday misfit partner and I’m so blessed to call her my friend!!  I don’t know what I’d do without her!! Oh, and she also makes the BEST chocolate chip cookies in the world!! Congratulations, Maggie!!!  ❤️-- Lisa Muurisepp

A word from her coaches….

Maggie is an original member (and 6am-er) and has come so far, although she’s too modest to tell you that. She likes to tell everyone she’s just the “grandma” of the gym but she goes just as hard as anyone.  She’s so easy to coach doesn’t mind moving some weight around. I know a lot of people her age, no one can move like she does or is as strong as she is. In my opinion, she sets the example of how important exercise is in your life and is the model of consistency.  I’m so glad to have known and coached her all these years, she’s an integral part of our community.--Coach Nick

I have known Maggie for over 5 years now. Since the first day she has been one of my favorite members to see walk through the doors.  Not only has she gotten in fantastic shape, but she has never once showed up without a smile on her face and the best attitude. I truly love seeing her in any class that I coach.--Coach Jon

I am not sure where to even start to talk about my feelings for Maggie as Member Spotlight. She is the kindest and sweetest soul!!! She is THE Spotlight… She is always asking about all of us…. our kids, our families, our health…. She encourages so many of us with her words, her actions…. and her cookies!  She is ALWAYS positive and has the most amazing outlook on life and relationships and children... and basically anything!!! I love to coach her because she listens and she gets so happy to continue to make progress on her journey. Quite possibly the best thing about Maggie is her humility…. she is more than humble and does not realize the inspiration she is to all around her.. she knows her body and her strength and adjusts always with that in mind, while continuing to challenge herself… and she is RIPPED!!!!!! Look at her back and arms!!!!  I am not sure what our 6am crew would do without our Veteran Badass Mama-Bear Maggie! Love you Mags and Congratulations on a well deserved recognition!--Coach Christine

Let's learn about Maggie:

Tell us about yourself?

Married for 38 years and still passionately in love with my husband ~ Greg makes me laugh every day!  I have 3 crazy kids and they all have a great sense of humor which they get from their Dad. Addie (32) ~ you all know is my clone, Conor (30) lives in New Orleans following his dream being a musician & Gavin (26) who just moved back to Florida is living the dream! They are my life….

What do you do out in the real world?

I work at Hofstra University managing mobile devices for Administration and Athletic Coaches. I’m very popular when new phones are released. I love my job!

CROSSFIT JOURNEY...

What brought you to Islip CF? How long have you been doing CrossFit?

My nieces were into CrossFit and mentioned how much they loved it.  When ICF opened 5 years ago, it was perfect timing for me to see what CF was all about. After the first class I was addicted!

What was your first CF workout? What did you think after it?

I don’t recall the actual first WOD but I remember meeting Rachel and Gina during the warm up. They both welcomed me with open arms 😊

What changes have you made in your workouts that have been the most successful?

Adding weights into my workout has been a significant change over the years. Before CF, my workout consisted of Cardio or Yoga, Now I have more muscle tone then in my 20-30-40 and early 50’s.

Most embarrassing/funniest gym moment?

It was a lifting day - back squats with Lisa. She had 150 on her back and I think I only had 75.  At the bottom of the squat – I turned to her and said “Lisa – I can’t stand up” never thinking to push the bar off my shoulder. We both laughed so hard that we feel to the ground. It seems silly now but I think that moment brought us closer together.

Another funny time: Nick’s profile picture was Hasselhoff from Baywatch so I changed mine to Pamela Anderson in her hot red bathing suit. I had 25 hysterical comments on my profile – But, Jeanann’s comment was truly the funniest: “Maggie – did you do something with your hair?”  I can’t believe she never mention my bombshell body….LOL!

Favorite movement? Least favorite? Benchmark WOD?

Please don’t judge me - but I secretly like burpees. Least favorite may be Wall Balls. We don’t play well together since the 14lb WB always hits me in the face.  Fact!

Favorite memory OR most memorable moment at Islip Crossfit?

Probably the Open workouts but Sunday Funday with my Misfits (Addie & Lisa) Rocks!  Team spirt brings the members together and the energy is always off the charts.

If you could program it, what is your perfect workout?

That’s a tough question since I like a combination of movements but can’t do most of them…. Another fact!

Favorite workout music?

Country of course ….. thanks to Nick Ullman

Advice for a new member or someone thinking of trying CrossFit?

The first class is always intimidating but stick it out for at least 1 month. Make sure you modify and always stay positive.

How do you find/make time to get your workouts in?

I am a morning person so the 6am is perfect for my schedule.

What is your favorite part of Islip CrossFit?

100 % the ICF community!!!!! Love Everyone– Coaches, members and babies!!!

What motivates you to keep coming back each day?

Lisa is my motivation as well as my wake-up call. Without her, I would stay in bed during the cold winter mornings.  Lisa ROCKS!! Also, the feeling of accomplishment after every workout is instrumental.

What is your greatest achievement in your fitness so far?

Most members are 20 to 30 years younger than I am so being able to keep up makes me feel young at heart.

What has been the most challenging part?

There are plenty of movements I have not mastered but the most challenging is Double Under.  Four years ago, I had a bet with Jon Lien to have DU’s by his birthday. Another birthday has come and gone with only a few DU’s at a time.  I lost that bet!!!!!

Short term goal? Long term goal?

At my age, being healthy and active is key! Long term goal ~ still being able to keep up with 6 am crew.

What/Who motivates or inspires you?

The list of my inspirations is too long….. but a BIG shout-out to:

  • All the Coaches – you’re motivating & encouraging with positive feedback. Love you all!
  • ICF working mom’s – You’re beautiful and able to juggle family, work & fitness with ease. Especially the 6am crew for getting up so early– you ROCK!
  • Pete who transformed his body before our very eyes.
  • Adam coming back full force after having major surgery.

The list can go on and on - determination we all have is exceptional!!

FOOD/NUTRITION...

Favorite Cheat Meal?

Bourbon and/or Chocolate – Can I consider either of them meals?

What changes have you made in your diet that have been the most successful?

I prefer clean- healthy food so I really haven’t made any major changes in my diet.

What is the worst “diet” you’ve ever been on?

Weight watchers - I ate everything on & off the diet!!!

What’s your go to breakfast?

Coffee + 2 hard-boiled eggs or a piece of fruit.

Do you eat before you workout? (If so, what?)

JUST FOR FUN...
